MAI KINO SWIM

Delicate notes drift across the crisp-white tundra of Mai Kino’s minimalist new single ‘Swim’. Her voice in hushed tones whispers a lullaby of birth and new life, which is an interesting contrast to the artist’s last track ‘Talk’, an almost hopeless detail of humanity’s disconnection with the world. However, as time passes our once held opinions can sway under the influence of change, for example the arrival of a new family member. This was indeed the case for Mai Kino who tells us that “I wrote [‘Swim’] as a gift to my baby niece who was born a few days after my own birthday. I wondered what it must be like to come into this world for the very first time... the beauty and terror of the unknown.” The simple visualiser that accompanies this gentle song envisions Mai Kino as a wide-eyed newcomer, taking in the world for the first time. We’re left to wonder, what does she see? - Hannah Thacker
